I have seen the episode. My guess is that the alien invaders wanted the technology for two control heavier than air ships. The quickest way to get is was to capture an Ercoupe and then reverse engineer it.

I Googled, and came up with this page about it. The Ercoupe reference is part way down the page. It is Ercoupe N3808H and it was lost in 1980. There is a link to the actual audio of the Mayday.
