I'm not an expert but I have these thoughts: Try parking your plane on
the compass rose and note the compass heading with the power off. Then
turn on the power to the plane and all avionics then gently tap the
compass (to overcome any stiction) and see if it lines up differently.
Then turn the power off and tap the compass again.

Often, compasses react to the electrical field around poorly shielded
electronics or wires that carry power. If this seems to be power related,
try complaining to the avionics shop to which you paid the big bucks for
installation - this would be a case of poor shielding. Turn on and off
different components to determine which is the culprit - the installation
might have made a previously well behaving avionics item start to put out
a magnetic field.

I guess I'd next try adjusting the compass with the brass (or plastic)
screwdriver and see if I can adjust out all (or almost all) the error.
I'd carefully note the deviation with power on and power off (if they're
different) on my compass deviation card.

If all else fails, I'd try re-routing the power leads to the new radio or
relocating the compass to high on the windshield (if that's an option on
your plane.)

Good luck.

Subject: [COUPERS-TECH] glareshield compass

hi. i have two 46 ercoupes but this tech question relates to my 69 aero
commander 100 darter. i just installed a garmin 300xl gps com on the top
of the radio stack and my compass just above it on the glareshield is now
reading off about 20 degrees. shat should i do? should i mount an spacer
that raises up the compass about a half inch? or try to mount it at the
top of the windshield (don't see how i could do this). or buy a vertical
card compass for 250 dollars and hope it isn't as sentitive to the
magnetic interference? what do you fine ercouper's suggest? i can't
afford to lower the expensively mounted gps/com in the stack. it works
great.
