The Ercoupe Instruction Manual, p. 10-11, is not as clear as it once was.
My copy (printed by Univair when it was "50 CENTS") is printed in two
colors
with red lines and black text. I believe somebody goofed in the printing
department and did not reproduce in red the following headings in the text
immediately below the heading "DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS":
1. Dust Operation - (when operating...)
2. Main Landing Gear Oleo Struts - (to fill...)
3. Nose Landing Gear Oleo Strut - (when filled to the upper working
limit, oleo strut holds 1-1/2 pints of fluid. For satisfactory
operation the fluid should be between 6" and 11" from the top of the
tapped filler hole, measure fluid level with the
airplane...undisturbed...approximately overnight.)
For those interested, ESM No. 41, p. 6, par. 7.(d) calls for AN-VV-O-366B
hydraulic oil for this purpose (not noted as inapplicable to Ercoupes
Serial
No. 1 thru 186, but should have been). The Ercoupe Instruction Manual, p.
10 has asterisks on the indicated lubricant for the Nose Wheel Oleo Strut
and the Brake Fluid Reservoir explained below as "C" (brake fluid) for
Serial No. 1 thru No. 112 and "D" (hydraulic oil) for Serial No. 113 and
up.
The note to the right confirms "Nose Wheel bearings Serial No. 1 thru No.
186..." were identical. The oil retainer in strut assemblies for the
double-fork nose wheels originally installed on serials 113-186 is (or
was...apparently no longer available) 34082-1 and compatible with "C"
(brake
fluid) and not hydraulic oil. The Ercoupe Parts Catalog, page 19, oleo
oil
seal (for serials 187-4500) is 34126-1 and compatible with hydraulic oil.
In any event, par. 8.(a)(5) says fluid "...level must be at red mark...
not...lower than green mark; so these marks should have originally been 6"
and 11" down from the top of the tapped filler hole on your gauge.
