I once saw a Tri-Pacer which had just taken off and returned more or less immediately, his spinner has split and half of it departed the airplane and went through the right wing around the position of the wing supporting strut. He said there was a lot of vibration most likely due to only half the spinner breaking away, it shook him up with the vibration and convinced him to land quickly.
Some years ago when I had my Mooney Cadet I heard a rattling noise as I turned the prop by hand during my walk round check, I consulted an A & P friend who was with me and we removed the spinner to find one of the four front plate lugs broken and rattling around inside. We took the plate off and I flew it from Hawthorne CA to Virginia where I got a new item and fitted it with a new spinner, costly exercise from Univair. They fly just as well spinnerless I can assure all.
