It can't have been thrown outward due to centrifugal force, as that force
would have been exerted equally in all directions.  I do however suspect
that impact with a blade of the prop would have made it a home run in one
direction or the other.  Questions is, did he even know it had happened,
prior to landing and noticing the uglies?
