Yes that is right but there is the one big issue and that is that you must
have the part manufactured to the drawing and "use all of the required
process". In the case of many Ercoupe parts in the wing and spar that
means
fabricating them from soft aluminium and then having them heat treated
(the
process) and I have found that it is hard to find the details required to
be assured that you have the required information. Some of the parts are
from extrusions and with out the raw stock there is no practical way to
make the part. I think that is the case on spar caps and it is why they
cost so much to purchase.

I would think very hard about the manufacture of parts that are not just
simple sheet metal. We have in this list debated the simple issue of
reattaching the wing attachment fittings when they have been removed.
There
is no simple way to do that. One owner had a tool made for several hundred
dollars just to do his correctly. Others have suggested using bolts and
that has some real concerns in it. The best thoughts I saw were the use of
hiloc bolts after reaming the holes but there were still some question
marks.

In the end you have to bet your life on the part you have manufactured and
accept the liability for it when you sell the aircraft. It can get to be a
mess if you use a part that is not PMA or from the original manufacture
produced under the type certificate (good used parts).

I am sure you will do the right thing and I wish you the best of luck.

Best regards,
Vern

Based on the letter that Harry produced for us, I can conlude that, if
there
is spar corrosion, I can have my A&P manufacture the part, provided we can
do proper quality control (i.e. original blueprint info).... I have no
idea
yet if there is any corrosion on my plane, nor do I know what part or how
much a replacement part (if req'd) would cost, I am just doing some
research..

Thanks all,

Matt

"If a mechanic manufactured parts (e.g., wing ribs) for
an owner, associated with a repair, would manufacture of the parts be
considered maintenance or production of a part by the owner?

Answer: It could be one or the other; in neither case, however, would
there necessarily be an FAR violation. If it was concluded that the
owner participated in controlling the design, manufacture, or quality of
the
part, he would be a producer, and the exception in FAR 21.303(b)(2)would
apply"
