A simple question which brings up debate is the selection of a carburetor for my C90-12 continental engine. Does anyone have the plain and simple between the Marvel Schebler and the Stromberg carburetor other than the accelerator pump? I currently have a rebuilt Stromberg on the aircoupe now and looking for opinions. I have "heard" issues with each one however, the questions still remains..........To Schebler or To Stromberg.

I've owned and flown with both.

I would go for the Marvel at this point for one primary reason...you really want to be able
to lean effectively at low altitudes and while idling/taxiing in a world where you're feeding
100LL to a 80-Octane motor.

Due to the nature of the beast, even if the mixture control on your Stromberg is
working right, it's hard to run the engine as lean as can be at lower altitudes. I've
heard said that running it 'so lean that adding significant power causes the engine
to stumble badly' on the ground and at idle will prevent a lot of the lead deposits from
building up.

Also, note that the Stromberg was never standard equipment on a C90 powered
Coupe.

I think mechanics are more apt to understand the Marvel carbs. That can be important
when you are stuck in the middle of nowhere with a gummed up carb.

Don't get me wrong...the Stromberg is a magnificent, wonderful, device well suited
for the conditions and uses that prevailed when it was designed. I wouldn't go too
far to replace one that was serving its original purpose well. But if I had one of each
in either hand, deciding which went in my plane, Marvel would be it.
