----[Please read http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm before following any advice in this forum.]---- On page 22 of the July edition of EAA's Sport
Aviation, they are asking for votes for your favorite aviation innovation.
The website for voting is www.countdowntokittyhawk.org.
I went to the website to vote
and Ercoupe was not even on the list of nominees. Eclipse Aviation is sponsoring the promotion. I wrote
the following to them about my feelings.
Eclipse PR:
I wanted to vote for the Ercoupe as one of
the greatest aviation innovations, and was disappointed to see it did not
make the list of nominees. What a shame. Fred Weick's Ercoupe was
the first production tricycle gear airplane. Because of the unique wing
and wing root design it was unspinnable. It introduced automatic carb
heat and even aileron trim on Trim-O-Matic models. Last, but not
least, it operated with only 2 controls and a single brake pedal on the
floor and flying, and taxiing, it was as easy as driving a car. The
CAA even issued an "Ercoupe Only" license. Over 5000 owners though it was
so great they went out and bought one (which you could do at the
local airport or at your favorite department store.)
It is hard to get more innovative than
that.
Food for thought.
