Steve,

Advice from an almost completely engine-ignorant  person:  I was advised to get the overhaul done to factory NEW specs, NOT to “serviceable” specs.  I did that to some extra cost but that engine held up VERY well.

Subject: [COUPERS-FLYIN] firewall forward

I have reached a bit of a milestone in my firewall forward rebuild

project of my Forney F1. I have dismantled the nose gear, and determined

what repairs are needed. I have removed the engine mount and am in

the process of stripping it so I can do a dye check. And today I spent

two hours with a very experienced and retired mechanic who helped me

pull the cylinders off the c90. Actually, it went so well we decided to

split the case as well and break the engine down completely.

The good news is that the engine shows only normal wear. There are

a couple of scratches in bearings and the like, and one cylinder has a

broken rocker boss, but nothing that spells doom and gloom. At this point

is looks like I am looking at about 1000 bucks for parts, about 1000 more

for repairs, and probably another 1000 to have the engine re-assembled

by a repuatable shop. That;s not bad for an engine that will run for another

10 years or so.

I would however, like to hear any advice that is out there, about what to

keep, what to go with new, and what to watch for. Also, what hops or

companies have others had success with for engine work and parts.

I am running on

Owner maintenance which affords me a few options, but I am putting

the engine back together as if it were certified.

I should mention one word of warning to others out there. When I took my

nose gear apart I found that there were at least three mistakes made by the fully licenced mechanic who did it when it was last done (about 1967).

So definately, parts and maintence manuals are a must when you are

doing this work. You just can't assume the guy who did it last new what they were doing.
