The breaker should match the rating of the lowest capacity part of the 
circuit which
is not protected by a lower capacity fuse or breaker down-stream.

This is one thing that bothers me with these alternator conversions. If
you 
just
throw a big alternator in there, and run it through existing wireing, you 
may exceed
the capacity of another component (likely a wire) due to rating or age.
You 
need
to make sure that the wire from the alternator output to that breaker is 
good for
the full alternator output/breaker rating. Then you need to make sure that
any
connection between the breaker and the main bus, and between there and
any other device not protected by an intermediate breaker or fuse is rated
for
the full load and is also currently in adequate condition to handle the
load.
