There is one other factor here that so far has not been mentioned.

Server side anti-spam software that didn't exist a year or so ago.

I administer the email server on which we run Spam-Assassin to
filter incoming mail.  It is set up to be fairly un-aggressive. It
passes a lot of SPAM as a result.

I have noticed that Ercoupers emails have a very high rate of
'false positives' due to high spam probablility scores. Although
I get them, they are marked as possible SPAM.

This may be partly due to the settings of or the inherent
characteristic of the coupers list-server.

A more aggressive anti-spam program might bounce those
same emails.
