----[Please read http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm before following any advice in this forum.]----Pete,
I've never run across this scenario. Is this spring broken and the two spring pieces are jammed in place? Or is it severely corroded and has become one with the strut?
The slide hammer idea seems plausible. If one good smack could jar that spring loose is my guess is in what your trying to do. My concern is how would you control this tool if the hook or spring "let loose." Hopefully the hook would not bang up the interior strut surface when that happens.
Reviewing Ercoupe Service Memorandum #41 "Rebuilding of Nose Landing Gear Assembly," review item #4 "Inspection, Reworking, and Assembly of Inner Cylinder, Wheel Support, Piston Assembly and Spring." This might be the only way to remove that spring if this or any other ideas don't pan out. I'd check with Univar for availability of parts like the oil retainer prior to disassembly.
