Steve: Another way of getting those cushion clamps together is
to use a small spring clamp to hold the ends together (I have also used small
vice grips), line up the holes for the screw with an awl, and then put the screw
in and start the nut. Once it is all in place and the nut started, it is easily
tightened up.
I think the difficulty encountered is also the
reason some of those clamps have extra long screws through them, so they can be
started more easily.
