TCM recommends preheating at 20 degrees F. N5466F is hangared in S.E. PA
where the average overnight low in Dec./Jan. is approx. 10 degrees F. Is there
anything wrong with placing a protected lightbulb in the bottom of the cowl
to raise the temperature during these relatively cold months. I have
used this technique, on occasion around the house over the past 50 yrs., and
found it effective-- ie. balky garage door opener, frozen water main valve,
etc.-- but I have never seen it offered as an engine preheating aid for an
airplane. Although the temperature rise would be modest, sometimes that is all
you need.
