However, the first 1/3 of your wing airfoil is metal and that is the most critical portion of your airfoil. If you cover with fabric, and your metal leading edge gets hail damage you will have to replace it. On the aft part of the wing where the metal skin goes, the airflow over the wing (boundary layer) is random and turbulent anyway. The airflow even flows forward at the wing skin in some instances. Dents to the metal on the aft of the wing are not as cricial.
