Alan;
Redundancy is a nice thing and a word of advice is to watch the weight.  These little machines are wonderful fun flyers where each and every pound matters.  (Reminds me I need to go on a diet.)  I really think if Fred felt all this extra stuff was necessary, he would have invented it.  If you need to make the jaunts Upstate and want all that jazzy stuff, get something a bit bigger, like a Comanche so you can land slowly.

A funny story I like to tell is that before I bought my first airplane, a 415CD, I already had my commercial rating with instrument and a bunch of hours.  Despite all my training and 20 years of personal aviating, I actually learned how to fly in that CD with the most minimal of flight instruments present.  Heck, one the compass even fell out of its mounting from ABQ to AFW!  Because of my coupe driving, now when I fly the big plane my instrument verification scan is so much sharper that it impresses my buds.  Dee Gee?  We don need no steekin dee gee!

Good luck with the coupe, as long as you fly, they'll be a place in your heart for them, much like your first flame!

Subject: [COUPERS-TECH] traffic proximity detectors/ vertical card compasses

Thanks to all for sharing their wisdom with a new Ercoupe pilot.  My co-pilot is still a little nervous about flying with me, however.  She thinks we need as much redundancy and capability in the plane as we can afford.  I have a Garmin 92 but she wants to get a second GPS, just in case.  I have a Microair 760 panel mounted radio and a bracket mounted JHP-520 handheld.  I have a transponder with mode C reporting. I have an audio panel that switches everything in and out of our 2 headsets.  She just suggested to me about getting a traffic alert system, which I found listed at around $500.  Anyone have any experience with one of these devices?  Do they work?  Are they worth the money?  Also, I was thinking about replacing the magnetic compass with a vertical card one.  Any words of wisdom on these choices would be greatly appreciated.
