Brass or steel, no aluminum. The fillings and the braces are covered in AD 2992-16-04 and can be seen on line at www.univair.com among other places.

The first step is to confirm that the fuel system is connected as designed.

 

The left and right wing tanks are connected together and the fuel line goes into the pump.  The mechanical pump has a limiter so it can’t pump too much fuel and overfill the nose tank.

 

When the fuel flows into the nose tank, more should be coming in than the engine can use at full throttle (by 2-3 times).  The excess goes out the overflow back to the wing tanks.  This keeps the nose tank totally full as long as there’s anything in the wing tanks.

 

The gravity feed fuel line goes from the nose tank to the carb.  There should be a continuous downhill from the tank to the firewall with no low spots.  From the firewall to the carb, there should also be a continuous downhill.  This avoids places where water or dirt may accumulate.

 

The gascolator should be attached to the carb.  There are a couple of ADs or service bulletins on this.  You’re A&P should confirm that these have been complied with – one (if my memory serves) requires a brass fitting between the gascolator and the carb.  The other requires two braces from the engine to the carb.  This is because in the high vibration environment of the engine, gascolators have been known to vibrate enough to break off the nipple, cutting off fuel to the engine while gushing it all over the hot engine compartment.  This is BAD. (With the brass connection and the braces, it has been a very safe installation.)

 

John at Skyport’s point about the two types of Stromberg carb and you should confirm you have gravity feed from the tank into the gravity feed carb.

Al,

Thanks I need to dive in and see how and what is there. I do know the previous owner told me when the pump is running the light on the panel still flickers, he said there is adjustment on the pump and it's set a little low. (pressure) Needs to be turned up. As Ron pointed out there is a vent in the cap (I have the indicator with the tube) on the header tank so pressure can't or shouldn't build up. But for myself and my Friend Jeff we are wondering why this is happening. The pump appears to be pretty good sized so in thinking about it I am wondering if it could somehow be the problem. I will check things out and keep everyone posted as to the findings. Thanks for your help.
