Don;
Sounds like you have an early serial number like I do. I
have a tank sitting on the shelf, but it too has a different bracket and
plumbing requirements. On my last coupe, the header tank was again
different from the two I now have! Anyway, I'm curious on how bad your
tank was and who advised you against a repair. A craftsman that knows how
to do these things should be able to solder and test the item without too much
difficulty. Then again, if the metal is so fatigued, it would be a
worthless endeavor. I would imagine that John can adequately "repair" a
tank as needed. If I'm not mistaken, he's an A&P with IA, so a "yellow
tag" would only be necessary for folks that were unfamiliar with the real
rules and regs.

My 65 Alon header tank had been repaired somewhere along the line. It appeared to have J B Weld applied over several pinhole leaks. It was weeping fuel at these repairs. I was advised that welding repair is completely out of the question. I ordered and received a new tank from UNIVAIR. It had the plumbing for their Service Bulletin A 19, which is not in my airplane, and it had different bracketing which did not fit my insatallation. I returned the tank for credit, and contacted John Wright , Jr. He will completely refurbish a tank for about $400, and his work is excellent. Of course, he cannot provide a yellow tag. I would not recommend "just repairing, not overhauling" a leaking tank, nor would I recommend having anyone other than John do the work,don bowen============================================================================== To leave this forum go to: http://ercoupers.com/lists.htm Search the archives on http://escribe.com/aviation/coupers-tech/
