A cinder black in the luggage compartment will help to compemsate for that
anemic 9 degree up elevator. That is what I did for a little while after I
converted my C to a D. But I didn't like the idea of having that brick in
the back, so I did the split tail mod. I spent more than $2500 to do it
and that included priming and painting the elevator and putting a new trim
cable in...which was the sort part....as well as the spring to tell you
you are almost at the limit of back elevator. That worked nice, but I
certainly could have used the money on radios, etc. I mean the plane flew
well before the mod and flew great afterwards... but the cost was a bit
high looking back at it. Then again, in the long run, there is no such
thing as a cheap airplane and I do love my 'coupe!!

I beleive you still need an A&P to do this work as it is a major mod to
the airframe. Oh yes...and a 337!

Can a D-tail be converted to an E-tail or does it have to be completely
replaced? Is it worth doing? Can a pilot/owner with good mechanical
skills do most or any of the work before being signed off?
