I dont know if anyone has answered this yet, but the FARs say that you
cannot operate a transponder (at all) unless in the previous 24 months it
has been tested by a certified repair station. They hook up a pitot static
box to your plane and take it up to the maximum certified altitude that
your plane's altimeter is certified for. It's usually 20K feet for small
GA planes. They also check the accuracy of your altimeter at the same
time, and do a system leak check too. All for the low price of about
150.00
