Norm,
Have you noticed any peculiar sounds while turning over the engine
by hand? Like a "scraping" or "squeaking" sound emanating from somewhere
within the engine? Do this with the top sparkplugs removed to eliminate
the
compression stroke.
I've experienced a Lycoming engine exhibiting almost the same
discrepancy. I can't recall the amount of time that was on the engine or
it's operational history but it turned out to be the thrust bearing
disintegrating.

Subject: [COUPERS-TECH] Engine stiff
----[Please read http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm before following any

Hello All
I have a 415-D with the C-85-12. At a certain engine temperature the
engine
gets "stiff" to turn. It still seems to run normally however when its
shut
down the prop seems to stop anywhere....even halfway through a stroke.
When
restarting the starter seems to "drag". A few minutes later it is fine.
My
theory was that the cylinders cooled quicker than the pistons and became
tighter, causing more engine drag. Now Im beginning to doubt this, as
last
week I was doing a short ground run and then handpropping checking each
cylinders compression and again it seemed to drag. This was after only a
2
minute ground run to make sure all was oiled up. (I have one cylinder
that
has less compression than the rest and I check it regularly to see if it
has
gotten worse.) Has anyone else noticed this on their C-85? The engine
has
about 950 hours on it and about 110 since topped out.
