Larry, what you are describing can also be caused simply by one plug lead shorting out either at the magneto cap, or at the plug connection. How old are the leads? I had the exact same thing- running rough, loss of power, popping, really bad mag drop. All I did was bend the wires back where they go into the plugs and the mags and I found the culprit. One plug wire had the insulation worn thin and the spark was jumping across to ground. It was not that old of a harness either. I was able to swap my harnesses from one mag to the other, and the problem followed with it to the other side, so I was able to first determine that it wasnt the mag.
