Bob,

That depends mostly on weight and prop and prop pitch.  Naturally, you need to make sure your mixture control system works – but that should be SOP, anyway.

 

With my C-85, at about 1350 lb., with a 7146 extreme climb prop, I’ve been able to get to 12,500 any time I wanted except once.

 

On my big trip out west, there was an afternoon flight when I tried to climb above the bumps (futile) but topped out.  My absolute ceiling, leaned, was about 11,500 which was a density altitude of 14,500.
