A helicoil is a permanent fix. Helicoiled threads are much stronger than the originals. You may be able to install a 6-32 helicoil into the 8-32 holes you have now. Compare the recommended drill size for the 8-32 tap and the 6-32 helicoil to decide, otherwise go with the 8-32 helicoils.
