My view:  The only reason for a dual-axis gyro horizon in an VFR aircraft is emergencies.   Fly for four decades outside of clouds and you'll never use it. Fly ONCE into a cloud and you'll pledge a tenth of your future income to The Church because Our Precious Lord put it in your head to install one. Your choice; your call.  I own one.  I never use it.  Maybe someday I will.  If I do, then Praise The Lord!

Agreed. Getting TSO'd electronic instruments into our planes might lead to a very expensive glass panel.
Although there are some handheld solutions out there that may do the job.
Still expensive though. Can't beat the simplicity of a $250 Gyro installation.

    I agree with most everything that you stated, with the exception of installing "electronic instruments" that is neither TSO'ed or STC on to the aircraft. To get the Stratomaster equipment approved for other that experimental aircraft use would only be expensive and time consuming.  Installing this equipment be field approve, one could only hope "For Reference Only" and runs the risk of having to placard the installation as such.

My thinking : As a VFR Pilot, when do I need a artificial horizon most, if at all? I turns. Do I do turns in a fast level cruise attitude?
If you need an artificial horizon to be able to fly level in cruise in VFR conditions, you should rethink your general abilities to fly. If you think that gyro is good when flying in MVFR conditions, and you need a gyro to do so - hand your wife you last will already.
 
However, if you think you need that extra drag of a ventury and the extra weight of a HG just to have the right fun in a Coupe, I would say have the ventury attached level with the window sill and have in mind that on climb out the HG might not be that responsive.
 
I would not put a vacuum driven DG or HG in my plane. You either pay with additional drag and non-reliability in slower flight or you pay to rebuilt an air pump every so often.
I rather spend that money on an electronic solution.
 
Every handheld GPS is a better substitute for a DG and HG are already replaced by pricey glass cockpits, but there are also some cheaper solutions out there. (http://www.sportflyingshop.com/Instr/Stratomaster/SmartSingles/AttitudeIndicators/attitudeindicators.html)
 
Drilling holes into the expensive skin of your coupe to install outdated technology without being required by FAA law to do so is something I would not do.
 
Now that will hopefully stir up some discussion here .
