Hi John (WRB speaking),
The short answer is that the mechanic you spoke with is either prejudiced against coupes (not uncommon) or of little experience with them (also not uncommon.
No properly experienced mechanic would agree with what you say he said about "all erco and forney". I would ask him his authoritative informational source. All aircraft with spars (wood or steel or aluminum) "have a wing spar problem" if poorly maintained, or if the FAA has issued an AD on a particular make and model. It is up to a prospective purchaser to have a knowledgeable "pre-buy" inspection to avoid such latent problems in a particular airframe, and to read the FAA's own words as are part of an applicable AD.
As to the "replaced/repaired at some point in time, if this occurred, as an example, in the year 2068, how would such relate to the purchase, ownership, safe operation, satisfaction and resale you presently contemplate? Your "mechanic" clearly paints with a big black brush far too indiscriminately.

William R. Bayne

Hello, I am new to this forum.. I am considering buying a coupe. My uncle had one a long time ago, when I was a kid. I talked to a mechanic at a local field. He told me that all erco and forney coupes have a wing spar problem,, He claimed that they will all have to be replaced-repaired at some point in time. Is this true? any info. would be helpful,, Thanks, John
