You are right in your logic.
The others are right about the regulation and the FAA. ANY plane which has EVER in its life
had a certified gross weight higher than 1320 lb., is FOREVER forbidden from
being flown under Sport Pilot privileges. (Unless the FAA changes the
regulation. (Don’t hold your breath.))
The reason is simple: There
are tens of thousands of experimental amateur built planes out there which
could change their gross weight by paperwork, then go ahead and ignore the
limit and fly over weight just fine (like they have been doing for many years).
The FAA made the rule the way they
did to forestall that and picked up the 415-D, etc., along the way.
The first line of the FAA definition of Light-sport aircraft reads:
Light-sport aircraft means an aircraft, other than a helicopter or
powered-lift that, since its original certification, has continued to meet the
following:
