Ed, I think that you're forgetting that some Ercoupe nose bowls are made without a fresh air intake hole.  If a person has one of those, he/she would need obtain the proper diameter flange to rivet to the nose bowl, drill the proper diameter hole in the nose bowl, and rivet the flange to the nose bowl with the brass screen placed between the flange and the nose bowl.  He/she would also have to obtain a similar diameter firewall flange and and drill the proper size hole in the firewall and rivet the flange to the firewall in case the Ercoupe did not have that either (some don't).  Then the appropriate hardware would be installed on the back side of the firewall.

Bob and John,

You just need some appropriate aircraft grade flexible tubing from that nosebowl opening to a box mechanism on the firewall.  The box has a flap-valve so you can close or open the airflow.  I think the tubing was tied to the engine mount along the way to keep it away from the muffler and pipes.

With the windows closed, I always got pretty good airflow because that nosebowl opening gets pressurized by the propeller passing by just an inch or two away.  The air flows through the tube so fast it doesn’t get heated up while in the engine compartment.  Perhaps they have an insulated tubing but I don’t know if you need it – mine wasn’t insulated and the air coming out the vent was the same temperature as outside the window.

On really hot days, I’d open the windows about 3-6 inches at the top.  Since my tighteners mean to keep the windows from sliding didn’t work for beans (and once I cracked a window with one), I just tied a shoe-string between the two window halves to maintain the gap I wanted.  The bow made for quick exit in an emergency (though just standing up and pushing the windows out has also proven to be effective).

I could get 70%-80% as much airflow through the cockpit on a hot day from the vent as I got with the windows open.

On a long cruise, I found having the windows mostly closed eliminated the minor buffeting you feel from the wide open windows so it’s less tiring.

We’ve got to wait for the guys who know something about mechanical stuff to guide you about what parts you need to order.  I’d bet you can get everything you need from Skyport Ercoupe Services.

I need a little help here. I have no hose going anywhere from this opening in the cowl either. It is essentually unbearable in the cockpit in the summer if I get in a shower and have to close the windows completely. I have a tubing for the heat inlet into the cabin but no other. Where and how is the air from this opening brought in? This could be a big help to me.

John,

That?s the opening for the cabin air.  You should have, or get, tubing from that opening to the flapper for the cabin air.

I got great airflow from that opening.

Hello all,, Response was great.. I will go to Terrell soon,, and see Mr. Hardin,, It is a relief that a coupe mechanic is so close by.. The trip was fun,, a little tiring, but a fun adventure,, Other concern,, was oil temp,, I landed one time and let oil cool down,, I have since found  that temp may have been o.k. for my setup,, One question,, There is a small hole in the front right of nose bowl,, about 2-3 inches in diameter,, It appears to be just about in line with oil tank,, It had a screen over it,, Looked like screen that is used on a house window,, anyway,, it had been completely covered with paint.. No air flow.. On my second day of flight,, I removed screen,, to let air flow,, It seemed to lower oil temp.. Was removing screen a good or bad thing to do??  Is hole suppose to help cool oil tank?  Thanks, John #93735
