The generator field switch is your second "master" switch somewhere in the cockpit. Some aircraft have a split switch setup where the master switch and the gen field switch can be pushed (rockered) together. The standard Ercoupe master switch is actually a double pole switch with just one lever visible in the cockpit this one switch is the battery master and the gen field together in one flick of the lever. My coupe has 2 separate switches which I like because I can turn off the generator's field excite circuit if I have a gen problem and still have battery power to my radio and/or lights. How would you know if you had a generator problem in flight- your ammeter might be pegged on the charge side. You'd want to be able to kill the field if this happened.
How to flash your field on any generator- on your generator you have 2 studs: one big and one small. The small stud is to the field- disconnect the wire that goes to it and momentarily touch 12 volts to that stud. It only takes a second or two and your field poles' residual magnetism is instantly restored. Since your generator is grounded to your engine, and your battery is grounded to your airframe, just make yourself a jumper wire long enough to go from your battery positive post to that stud. JUST DONT TOUCH ANYTHING ON THE AIRFRAME WITH THAT HOT WIRE!
