It's "ashless dispersant", not "detergent". I understand it's great stuff. Our club plane (C-172) has been fed only AeroShell 15W-50, for the most part because of a conversation I had 12 years ago with Ben Visser, then an engineer at Shell, now apparently retired (not with Shell anymore) and you can see what he has to say at: http://www.generalaviationnews.com/editorial/column.lasso?- token.author=Ben%20Visser If you go there, page back and not there is an article about mixing oils. For my part, I've concluded Exxon has hopped over Shell and I'm using Exxon Elite 20W-50. Obviously I think it is great sauce. You single viscosity devotees, enjoy, as long as you keep an eye on the thermometer. In the past few weeks in New England, the temp. has varied about 40º to 50º, and when I flew the 'Coupe a couple of weeks ago it needed summer oil - when I flew it yesterday (ice on the ramp) I needed winter oil. The club 172 has about 2100 hours on it and is still going strongly. Fortunately one of our members is an A&P / IA and he keeps track of compression and oil analysis as well as flies the plane. Needless to say I'm unconvinced by the single weight oil routine any more than I am about overhauling by the clock.
