I don't believe you would be able to overlay the decal on the metal version.  They will simply attach to the cowling after removing the paper from the back of the decal.

 

 Remember when we were kids how we would "soap" the surface and then position and re-position a decal to exactly where we wanted it and then squeegee it to remove the soap.

 

Of course, these decals are made of medium heavy vinyl...not paper.  If you are a fan of NASCAR you have seen the product on the cars.  The numbers are not painted.  They are vinyl decals.
