Eliacim,
The plane I Bought 4 months ago did not have any compass
deviation card. I guess it's not good to show up at the check
ride without it. How do I do one?
Is this something the A/P does?
Eliacim,
This should have been part of your ground school. Don't fret if it wasn't,
it's not hard.
You find the compass rose painted on the pavement at your airport or at a
nearby airport. Then you place the aircraft perfectly lined up on the
compass rose with a cardinal point. To me, the easiest way to get it
"perfect" was to back the plane off about 3 plane lengths then pull it
forward over the center of the rose to the point. Then I eyeball it to see
if it looks "perfect."
Climbing inside, you note how many degrees you have to add or subtract to
get the correct heading (as shown by the rose) and mark it on the card.
Then you realign the aircraft to perfectly match the next angle on the rose,
climb inside and note the deviation needed to get the correct heading.
Repeat till you've filled all the places on the compass deviation card.
It's not hard but it's tedious.
This is not just for the check ride (where it is essential). It's also
important for flight safety. And besides, many FAA wienies who wouldn't
know anything meaningful to check on a small aircraft will issue a violation
if the compass deviation card is not filled out properly. (Note that they
have no idea if the information on the card is correct. Also, fortunately,
FAA wienies are few and far between.)
It's worth doing.

I've seen compass refill kits at Wag Aero. Never used them, so I can't vouch
for how well they work.

Yesterday, Monday, was a beautiful day to fly here in
Nebraska. As I was flying my Alon, I noticed drops of
fluid coming from my compass. Can they be refilled or
must I buy another one? I just got the deviation card
redone on this one to be compliant with the FAA, and
now I suppose I'll have to do it again with the
replacement. Any advice greatly appreciated. Thanks
Scott

If you want to be extremely accurate, you probably would want to run the
engine while comparing the compass rose to the aircraft compass. It also
is sometimes a good idea to turn the radio on and off to see if that
makes a difference. These "extra" checks are probably more important in
aircraft flying IFR . That said, a good guess is often necessary when
attempting to navigate only by a compass in an aircraft.
