Hi John,
Continuing interesting discussion...... My coupe's mixture was wired rich when I got the coupe.... I installed a mix control cable, but found it almost useless for the flying I do....all about max of 5000 feet. I took the mix control cable out KISS..
In 1984 I flew the coupe to 12, 300 feet with a roc then of about 150 ft/min....wired rich...
Recently I installed a mix control cable again..., and now find the mix control does work, but think the overhauled carb ended up with a too low fuel level setting. Moving the mix toward lean immediately - even 1/2 inch studders the engine at 7500 feet !.
I haven't yet checked the fuel level in the carb..... runs so well, starts so quickly, burns less that 5 gal /hr, and doesn't get hot.....uses virtually no oil between 25 hr changes (Shell 15W50 semi).....
Come warmer weather I will check float level, as it seems I am running quite lean all the time, tho plugs do not look fried....
Regards,
HArry
Don't mess with it! ;) Checking the float level on these is not for the faint of heart. If you've never done it, you may want to leave it alone. It's impossible to do if there's any appreciable leaking at the needle valve.
Actually, your observed behavior sounds pretty normal. There usually isn't any appreciable RPM increase and the ease with which the engine can be silenced is one of the reasons so many are wired rich.
