Called Univair. They will only say their exhausts will fit the 415 series
and early Forney's. They don't know if it will work with my O-200. It'd be
a crap shoot. They also do not warranty anything they sell... across the
board (this surprised me). If it breaks relatively soon (like 2 months/20
hours or less), they said they'd probably send out a replacement... But no
promises.

Called Dawley. They will happily repair my soft steel stacks and return
them tagged and ready to install. Stainless steel stacks are another story.
Since I have soft steel, they can't "repair" it to be stainless steel. This
means that if they built me stainless steel stacks, then it would be sold
without any warranty and without any "tag". I would only receive a
materials sheet and would have to inspect it myself and install it as an
"owner produced" part... Meaning that it would be my own liability for any
problems. The price is about 3/4 the cost of the Univair stainless steel
stacks.

Called MetalTek. They will repair my soft steel stacks and return them
tagged. Chris there says he owns an Ercoupe with an O-200 himself that he
fabricated steel stacks for. I didn't get the price of him doing the same,
but suspect it'll be the same issues as Dawley.

Skyport Services is closed until Jan 3rd, so I don't have any info on them.

What do you guys think of the "owner produced part" option? I'm tempted.
If I went that route, what about local shops that make high performance
stacks for cars? Bad idea?

I really would like to install stainless steel stacks, but no one seems to
offer any that "for sure fit" or have any warranty. I might end up just
getting this one welded up until I have the time/money to get stainless
steel ones manufactured.

Jason,
I was in the same situation a few years ago. It's too bad Univair
decided to sell only the more expensive stainless steel pipes. Skyport's
source for exhaust pipes is Wag-Aero. Wag-Aero pipes will not fit O-200
installations. Reason from Wag-Aero: "The engine shock mounts are thicker
on O-200 installations." End of story.
My soft steel exhaust stacks are from Univair, as your picture shows
they are too. They fit great for O-200 installations. Wag-Aero pipes are
too short and will rub hard against the lower engine mount braces where the
exhaust pipe turns inboard toward the muffler. Plus the muffler is too
close to the nose strut upper mounting cup, you would have to cut a hole in
the heat shroud. I'm unsure if Wag-Aero changed their tooling just because
of me.
If you're like me, forking out $1500 bucks for two stainless tubes
from Univair can put a dent in any repair budget. There is, luckily, an
alternative. You can get your pipes repaired; even the one in your picture
is not a problem. Places like http://www.dawley.net I've heard will do a
wonderful job repairing pipes to like new status. Yes, they are FAA
approved.
Those "beads" you speak of are what's left of the "flash-coating"
when the pipe was new. Hot spots on the pipe tend to melt this coating off
through time. When the pipe was new it had a nice white color coating from
Univair.
