Hey Eliacim: You are correct, the compass swing is done with everything
running as it would be when you are flying. I find it easier to line everything
up by taking a little longer run up to the heading you are aligning to. You can
probably help yourself by putting the plane in position (from the outside) and
then getting in to see what the alignment looks like from the cockpit.
It is difficult to read that small compass card to
within a degree anyway, so make several passes to check your alignment and get
everything just right. You will get the hang of it after a few passes. If you
cannot get a rose with every 30 degrees marked, just take the ones that are.
North, East, South, and West will give you enough information to fill out a
card. Besides, when you fly cross country, you will be either using your GPS
handheld, or checking the chart often (or maybe both) to make sure you are
on track.
Good Luck, and let us all know how the check ride
goes next month.
