Richard.
Excellent post.

And your argumentation is convincing too.
Let's hope that you can have an inspection for $400. I surely can not and I am not even sure if I can have such inspection at all.
Seems like only airliners are owning such equipment around here.

But thank you for pointing out that this inspection is for now only to be scheduled every 6 years.

I did not read the document right and was in the believe to face a yearly requirement. having our birds X-rayed from time to time is a good idea - no matter what the age is. One could predict that if ones established, inspections like that will become common place for us owners of museum pieces.
I am afraid of the expenses though.

Still I stand to the fact that corrosion was not the cause for any of the in-flight breakups this SB claims to take care of.

Subject: [COUPERS-TECH] Cost and benefits of SB 32

----[Please read http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm before following any advice in this forum.]----

People seem to be getting very excited about this with out asking anybody what the cost might be. When I first posted the existence of SB 32 that was my question--how much will it cost. I wrote Terry Taylor at NDE Services, the person listed in the SB that helped Univair put this together. In his reply, He tells me the cost for the inspection would be $400.00 plus travel. If I take my Coupe to the closest airport to him the cost is $440.00 plus the AP's time to prepare the Coupe for inspection. I could do all the preparation expect removing the window channels, or if it were done at an the same time SB 31 is done, the cost is between 400 and 500 dollars. A fair amount of money but not a great burden to do every six years. The big risk is in failing the inspection or is it. If you fail the inspection you end-up parting out your Coupe and maybe 100 pounds of scrap aluminum left over, but you are alive. I know that no has Coupe has crashed because of bad rivets.

What are the benefits of doing it, besides being alive. One you will know there is no visible corrosion is the spar and rivets are sound (SB 31 and SB 32). How many of you would buy another Coupe that has not had SB 32 done? If two identical Coupes are for sale how much more would you pay for the aircraft which has had SB 32 done over the one that has not be inspected? I will have mine done, I don't know when because I would like to have it done the time next SB 31 is done which I believe it is due in January of 07. It would be cheaper for me to take it to Denver before the next annual and have it done. (Travel cost for Terry to come to Pueblo where my annuals are done is almost as much as the inspection, but my AP may know somebody closer.)

I would guess that within a few years the spar will have to be NDE tested. It is only a matter of time. Something I am not looking forward to, but I will keep my Coupe.
