A certificated private pilot (or higher) may choose to allow one’s medical to expire and operate within the privileges and limitations of the Sport Pilot certificate for so long as one has a valid US driver’s license.  One must be properly rated in the category/class of aircraft of course.

Jerry,

if you had a valid private pilot certificate, you cannot operate as a sport pilot- I believe its one or the other.
