as reported in the Montgomery Advitiser Paper:
March 8th, 2006
Name of passenger and pilot in crash released
Wetumpka — Two people were injured Tuesday night when a two passenger, twin-engine aircraft crashed in an agricultural field near Staton Prison.
The pilot, Lloyd Probst of Montgomery, walked away from the crash that happened shortly after 10 p.m. said Elmore County Sheriff Bill Franklin.
The plane came to rest upside-down and the passenger, Herbert Sloane of Montgomery, had to be cut from the aircraft by rescue personnel. Probst and Sloane received minor injuries and were taken to Elmore Community Hospital.
Franklin said Probst reported engine trouble as he was approaching Wetumpka Airport. The men were traveling from Alexander City to Wetumpka.
“911 received a call from the tower at the Wetumpka Airport,” Franklin said. “They had received a radio call of an aircraft in distress near Drayton Prison. We attempted to block traffic on Highway 111 in case a pilot needed to make a landing, but he had already touched down in a field near Staton (Prison).”
The pilot reported total power failure to the 1948 model Earth Scoop, Franklin said.
The crash is being investigated by the Federal Aviation Administration.
