I currently have a 415-C undergoing an extensive
restoration and had the following NDI inspections performed during the course of
the restoration (including the SB32 rivet inspection) by Paragon Services, Inc.
Wichita KS 316-945-5825. A Level III certified inspector carried out the
inspection. The wings were de-skinned prior to the inspection, and the
lower fuselage belly skins were removed. The inspections themselves cost
$1,150. This aircraft was purchased as a non-flyable project from New
Mexico. It had spend it's life in the desert southwest.
F. Penetrant Inspections:
- Inspection of Control Column Tee Welds for Cracks
(IAW SB 26)
- Inspection of Wing Attach Fittings for cracks IAW
ASTM E 1417-05
Eddy Current Inspections:
- Inspection of all accessible radii of Wing Main
Spar Upper & Lower Caps for cracks and/or corrosion
- Inspection of all accessible radii of Wing Center
Section Main Spar Upper & Lower Caps for cracks and/or corrosion
Ultrasonic Inspections:
- Inspection of Wing Main Spar Upper and Lower Cap
horizontal flanges for exfoliation corrosion
- Inspection of Wing Center Section Main Spar Upper
& Lower Cap horizontal flanges for exfoliation corrosion
- Inspection of 5/32", 1/4", and 5/16" rivets in
Wing Main Spar Center Section Upper & Lower Caps for cracks and/or corrosion
IAW SB 32
Results: all OK except LH Wing Spar Lower Cap
- numerous indications of corrosion scattered throughout all radii.
Corrosion areas varied in length and depth with the longest area approx. 0.5"
long and greatest depth greater than 0.040". Also, on same cap horizontal
flanges, an area of corrosion in aft horizontal flange was discovered.
This obviously lead to the replacement of the lower spar cap on the LH wing with
a new part from Univair. My IA is sending the bad spar cap to Univair at
their request, and will file a Service Difficulty report with the FAA.
