I swapped out my original elevator in my 415C with a newer split one off of an Alon, thanks to Paul Anton’s help, a few months ago. I am very pleased with the results. I used to come in on final at about 85mph and touch down around 75mph. I now can come in at 70-75 indicated and touch down at 60. I used to lift off at 70-75, but now my Coupe lifts off at just a hair over 60. Every landing I’ve made since the swap has been a real greaser. We got it approved without the springs. When landing, you can barely feel the touchdown now. I just hold it off the runway with the yoke pulled all the way back until it touches down. I tried slow flight several times and with the yoke all the way back, and at about 2000 RPM, it just flies along nice and steady holding the same altitude at 53mph (indicated and GPS). Turns at that speed with a little more power were no problem at that speed either. I tried this with the original elevator, but don’t remember how slow it flew, although I’m certain it was quite a bit higher, but it used to get quite a bit of buffeting from the tail then. That doesn’t happen anymore. All in all, I am extremely please with the results and recommend the conversion to anyone who can find an available elevator to put on.
