More information on the stainless main spar.
The owner of the coupe is South of Buenos Aires, but the Faculty of
Aeronautical Engineering of the University of La Plata and the local
Naval Air Base have a shop where they do all of the metal work on planes
for the Navy and the University students.
The spar was made as a replica of the original spar but in stainless
steel.
I am still waiting on details / pictures / drawings, or whatever they may
have.
The spar was tested for strength in the test rig and found to be of higher
strength than the aluminum version and also slightly higher weight. they will
also study making it lighter and of equivalent strength as the aluminum
spar.
The spar was installed and the plane has been flown (illegally). At this
time the plane is still officially grounded by the FAA (local equivalent) who
recognize the airworthiness of the part but cannot legally certify it as it is
not aluminum. They do not have the same regulations as here so if someone here
can get an approval for a stainless spar from the FAA, it would set a precedent
for the process there. So the interest in cooperation with US coupe pilots can
be mutually beneficial.
More information to come ....
