LOL. I wore a hat with the top open...
once.
It was my favorite AOPA hat and I thought having it
under the headset would help ensure it didn't come off.
Well... I was scanning for traffic that ATC said was
less than a mile away and 1000' higher... took a look up and WOOOSH! the
headset and cap were off (I'm fairly tall - 6'1").
Thankfully, the headset just dangled over my right
shoulder, but my cap was swirling around and around on the "hat shelf" behind
me. It took a few moments to get the windows up enough so I wouldn't have
to worry about my cap making an escape.
I made a long reach back and retrieved it. From
now on, it sits in the passenger seat with the seatbelt through the back of
it. I know I could try to wear it backwards, but that wouldn't help shield
the sun's glare and I don't want to risk my favorite hat again. Next time,
it may not choose to stay with me. Heh.
