I lean my C-90 the same way that you described, except I turn the mixture in about 8 turns on my particular vernier control. I lean it at any altitude above 4000 feet. As far as I can calculate, I burn an average of 5.3 GPH. That includes some flights with leaning and some without, but always running 2400 RPM while at cruise. 5.3 seems low to me, but for the past 100 hours, that's what it has been averaging. I have not, however, carefully checked it on a long cross country where the power setting stays the same for more than a couple of hours.
