----[Please read http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm before following any advice in this forum.]----Thanks, Syd. My serial number is 1963, and it was a C-75 up until last week. But it sounds like the trim tab and control just happen to be the right ones for my new C-85!

No, yours is stock from about Serial No. 2200 to about 4200, and is exactly right. The large trim tab is correct for the C-85 engine. The old system (pre Ser. No. 2200 or so) with the crank handle on the instrument panel tightened or loosened a separate cable that went back to the tail of the airplane that pulled on a spring that gave varying amounts of pressure on the elevator. That system had no trim tab. In the spring of 1946 the engineers at ERCO decided that a trim tab would be better, since in the event of an elevator cable failure, a person would still be able to control the elevator and safely land the airplane using just the trim tab for pitch control. The older, crank and spring system would not allow a person to do that. All Ercoupes from Ser. No. 2200 or so on have the trim tab. At about Serial No. 4200 ERCO came out with the throttle quadrant in the middle of the panel, and the trim control was moved from the left side to the middle of the panel at that time. The cable still passed along the lift side of the fuselage back to the tail of the plane.

So I'm kind of confused. My trim handle is on the left wall of the cockpit, and has a cable that gets pushed or pulled to move the trim tab. I didn't realize there were so many other options! Is mine stock or some sort of add on? I DO have the large trim tab...
I should be getting my baby back this week with the new C-85 upgrade (O-200 crank STC). Kind of anxious to see how she climbs!

----[Please read http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm before following any advice in this forum.]----Ed,
I think this is the first time I've read about the spring being a potential problem. My 415C has this design with the crank handle on the instrument panel. I've seen the spring and wondered what may be the results of a break. Sounds like this may be a good item to replace as it appears to be an easy preventive maintenance item and low cost - a good safety/economics ratio per se, IMHO.
