Don, I have used the non locking type of nylon tie-down straps on my C-150H that is tied down outside. I locked them with a tie wrap around the adjusting handle and it seemed to work well. However, several months ago we had a very strong front come through with a lot of wind. I decided to drive out and check the tie downs and to my surprise found one wing and the tail straps laying on the ground off the aircraft. Tie wraps were still in place so I was puzzled. With the wind howling I redid the tie downs and while walking towards the front of the aircraft I saw the right wing strap fall to the ground. With the rocking of the wings in the wind, the rubber coated hooks would bounce in the eye and would fall out. I have gone back to Nylon line until I can find the tie downs with a device called a 'mouse' on the rubber coated hooks keeping them in place if the strap is slackened by aircraft movement. Aircraft tie down chains in the Navy all had a mouse on the hooks and they were always made of chain. How many were used to tie down a F-4 in heavy weather? Lots.
