Richard- Yes, I'm another couper that found out that Black Oil & one qt.
every one& a half hrs. was bad news. My coupe when I purchased it had less
than 200hrs on overhaul with oil consumption problem which I lived with
for over 650 hrs! Engine ran great! I finally decided to pull cyl's to fix
an oil leak problem. I found every cyl had a stuck compression ring. One
also had a broken ring! Cyl's required a lot of work cleaning out
deposits.
I sent one cyl out to have a exh guide replaced.New 100 octane valves on 3
cyl's, new pistons/rings all around. a friend gave me 4 low time
serviceable piston pins(new type) rockers refaced & my " Kitchen Overhaul"
was on it's way. Oh, I call it that because I did all measurements There &
painted cyl's on back patio! 82 hrs on top now & no more black oil. TED

Coupers, I have to agree with Lee, I just had to do a top on my 85-12
engine. The airplane had 100 hrs since major when I bought it, but had
been
in storage for a year. I have only flown it for 30 hrs due to high oil
consumption (1qt. in 1.5 hrs and the oil would turn black) After pulling
the
cylinders I found a stuck ring and two cylinders were 015. over and
beyond
limits. Installed two serviceable std. cylinders with + 5 rings, new
exhaust
seat and guide in one cylinder. I now have 2.5hrs on it and so far am
very
pleased with the results. Oil is still showing 4.5qts. and good color.
And
no oil leaks!!! The engine had been rebuilt at a certified, petrified,
and
justified repair service! My Inspector and I did the top and I feel like
I
know what I have in the repair. So if anyone out there has high oil
consumption and black oil you may have the same problem. Dick L. 3041H
