 Jim had reported that he was "on approach to RW 26" when his engine quit. I read that to mean he was making a straight-in approach, not a base leg to final in the landing pattern. If so, he simply ran out of altitude while he was doing everything right. I can't envision a "technique" that would have helped him.

 

Conversely, Jim might have been flying in the airfield pattern, a different situation  - please let us know, Jim (and congrats for your good outcome to a lousy situation).
