I am assuming you mean that you are using the handheld with the "rubber duckie" style antenna supplied with the radio? You won't get as good performance as a fixed radio for a few reasons:

1: output power of the handheld is 5w (where a fixed radio is 7-10w)
2: you might as well plug a banana wrapped in wire as use a "rubber duckie" - they are not particularly efficient designs. A properly tuned VHF fixed antenna is way better and more efficient. 3: best place to have the radio is above the windshield lower edge (and is also pretty inconvenient in a coupe) so most handhelds get stuck down in the well shielded area of the fuselage (which is also a great place for RF to bounce around in.)

The feedback problem could be (assuming the same configuration with the stock antenna) is that you might be getting RF back through the headset noise cancellation circuit. As this is an active noise cancelling system, there is a weak point where too much local RF might get fed back into the headset. Best bet is to try with an external antenna hooked up to the radio. If you are already using an external antenna, check to make sure that all of your coax connections are tight and that the grounded side of the coax is securely connected to the fuselage where the antenna mounts. I have seen where a bit of condensation has caused pretty bad electrical connections between the antenna mount and the feedthrough hole which has resulted in corrosion around the mount.

Just some thoughts and experiences with handhelds. I own a Vertex VXA-700 radio which I use as a backup when I fly (and for access to 2m ham bands for my other "hobby" ;-)

Cheers!

Subject: [COUPERS-TECH] IC-24 and Intercom problems

I am experiencing problems somewhat similiar to Tandy Allen. I have a pair of Lightspeed 20xl, a FlightCom intercom and an IC-24 handheld. Sometimes it works, sometimes feedback, and sometimes noise. I wonder if this is interaction with the IC-24.

Additionally, if I use the IC-24 directly with my 20xl (no intercom), it doesn't appear to have any range. Maybe 6 or 7 miles from 2000 ft for comm and maybe 20 miles for nav. Does anyone have any experience with this handheld in a Coupe?

Thanks

Darrell
