Dave,
I believe the soft stops were put on the "E" models with the split elevator
and later models.  The split elevator Ercoupe will stall and the spring
adds pressure to the yolk when it is pulled to a point approaching
stall conditions alerting the pilot.  I believe there is also a "safe flight"
 warning system on these later models to additionally warn of an impending
stall.  Ya all that know for sure,  let me know as my E model will
fly someday.
