Interesting Ed,
I am looking at the Continental Operator's manual.  I do not see a torque curve, only HP and BMEP (in PSI) .  If I assume BMEP is related to peak pressure in the cylinder, perhaps it is equivalent to torque.  In my C 85 peak HP is at 2550 RPM - where it reaches 85 HP and the curve stops - it is pretty linearly increasing up to that point.  Peak BMEP is at 2450 RPM but is essentially flat from 2300 to 2550.  From this I might conclude that torque is also flat over this RPM range and therefore the HALT exercise is not a big deal.

BUT - I am not a mechanical engineer so I am full of speculation on this - if there are any out there that really understand torque and BMEP please chime in.
